Wind Power
Wind power is simply power derived from wind. We harness this green energy by creating wind turbines which use blades to collect the wind's kinetic energy. The wind flows over the blades creating lift, like the effect on airplane wings, which causes them to turn. These blades are connected to a drive shaft that turns an electric generator to produce electricity.
A proven and reliable technology, wind turbines have been generating electricity for nearly 100 years. Actually, this same basic technology – used on the world’s largest wind farms – is now available to today’s homeowner and business owner. These small residential units and their larger, commercial counterparts are robust, require no regular maintenance and are built to last for 20 years or more.
Like solar power, wind has exciting potential as a green energy source because it's:
- Completely free, inexhaustible and renewable.
- Extremely clean, generating no pollution or greenhouse gases of any kind.
- One of the most economically efficient forms of energy to produce. Currently, on average, it costs about 5 cents per kilowatt-hour to produce wind energy, which is cheaper than virtually all other forms of alternative energy.
While today’s wind power technology can accommodate about 70 percent of an average home’s energy needs – so you’ll probably need to still use some electricity provided by your utility – it can significantly cut your electric bill from day one.
